Thanksgiving Day is a holiday celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November. It has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863.
The event that Americans commonly call the “First Thanksgiving” was celebrated by the Pilgrim Fathers after their first harvest in the New World in 1621. This feast lasted three days. Today families come together and have the traditional Thanksgiving Day dinner: stuffed turkey with cranberry, sauce, sweet or mashed potatoes, cornbread and pumpkin pie. American football is an important part of many Thanksgiving celebrations in the United States. Professional football games are often held on Thanksgiving Day and families watch it on TV. A famous tradition is the National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation. A few days before Thanksgiving, the President of the United States receives a live turkey as a gift. Traditionally, the President pardons the turkey, sparing the bird from being cooked for Thanksgiving dinner.
